Johnson captured iconic images of the Fillmore district, a thriving community for San Francisco’s Black residents before they were forced out by government “redevelopment” initiatives in the 1960s. He also documented the civil rights movement, including the 1963 March on Washington, and photographed high-profile figures such as WEB Du Bois, Langston Hughes, Thurgood Marshall, Nat King Cole and Eartha Kitt. Benefitting the San Francisco University High School Financial Aid Program, the monthlong event has raised over $18 million throughout its history to provide hundreds of deserving Bay Area students with world-class college preparatory education. Cultural significance aside, the real stars are the designers whose interior concepts not only reimagined every space in the stately home, but also help to predict the next big trends in design. And for one top San Francisco–based design firm, it meant reprising a role it played 35 years ago. “It was only my second showcase ever, and it was at the very end of the wow-wow ’80s,” says AD100 designer Suzanne Tucker, cofounder of Tucker & Marks Design, who tackled the home’s dining room with an over-the-top formality in its original Showcase premier.

The tomahawk looks really, really cool, but it’s somehow more lean that the imperial New York strip and much more expensive. Unless you’re obsessed with gnawing on gigantic bones, go for the strip. If Niku didn’t have A5 steaks, this would be the best thing on the menu. It’s deeply marbled and you’ll be dreaming about the charred outside for days. You’ll only be able to taste a slight difference between the cuts, but each is rich and fatty and so incredibly tender that your knife will practically fall through it. Every single bite will take your mind somewhere it didn’t think it could go.

The group also included computer science students in Northwestern’s Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, who are also studying subjects including biological sciences, cognitive science, economics, and political science. ASG, led by Raymond Gindi, and its partner, Helm Equities, are developing Parterre 42, a $300 million office and retail complex planned for 4201 Northeast Second Avenue, on the northern edge of the Miami Design District. The joint venture paid $12.7 million for the development site in 2016. Companies like Airbnb, Pinterest, Anchor Brewing Company and Zynga call the Design District home. There are restaurants, grocery stores, cafes and parks within blocks of our Design District apartments.

Even when you inevitably order everything in sight, you can get in and out for around $30. Flour + Water is a Cal-Ital legend in the Mission with creative pastas and a laidback space. We could eat at State Bird Provisions five nights in a row and never get bored—that’s because the Fillmore spot makes the most creative small plates in the city. These potatoes have some serious crunch on the outside, but are impossibly fluffy on the inside.

Our new home is at 2569 Third Street in the American Industrial Center and opened to the public in April 2013. Our new location allows us to expand our exhibition space and to build our first-ever dedicated space for public programming, including our popular MakeArt workshops. The rich brownie made with wagyu fat is crunchy on the top and fluffy on the inside. Wagyu-fat caramel and browned marshmallow add most of the sweetness in the dish, and miso Dippin’ Dots round it out. Even if you don’t think you have room for dessert, you’ll regret not ordering this.
California Inspires Top Designers
As a non-collecting institution, the museum actively collaborates with artists, designers, museums and universities, as well as design venues and practitioners to create inspirational experiences in the world of craft and design for visitors of all ages. Computer engineering alum Avery Ching (’02, PhD ’07), the cofounder and chief technology officer of Aptos Labs, shared his experience transitioning from roles in industry to launching a startup. Aptos is a Web3 technologies studio based in Palo Alto that is building on the Aptos Layer-1 blockchain.
In her “Jewel Box Kitchen,” Kristen Peña of K Interiors engaged TBC Plaster Artisans to give her walls a sumptuous shine with a high-gloss Venetian plaster using Benjamin Moore’s Townsend Harbor Brown. In the grand foyer, Nancy Evars bathed the walls in a shiny shade of aubergine from Little Greene Paint. Just a few feet away, in the “Verdant” grand hallway, Lauren Berry matched a lacquered Arabesque console table from Randolph & Hein with her high-gloss blue-green walls. Chubby Noodle in the Marina is our go-to in the neighborhood for a good time and even better food.

When your meal is over, the only regret you’ll have is going for the regular steak knife over the shiny scalpel or mini cleaver to wave around like Bill the Butcher. Bay Area native Alex Feng, a fourth-year student earning a combined BA/MS degree in computer science, appreciated the unique opportunity to get an insider’s experience of the companies he grew up nearby. Northwestern Engineering’s Samir Khuller accompanied the cohort — which included McCormick School of Engineering students pursuing undergraduate and master’s degrees in computer science as well as students in industrial engineering and management sciences and mechanical engineering.

Even though people show up in t-shirts and Patagonia vests, this is definitely somewhere to go for a special occasion—you’re probably not walking out for under $250. And while that can feel like you’re spending more than the entire special effects budget of a Spielberg movie, at Niku, you’re not just paying for dinner—you’re getting a whole new outlook on what it means to eat steak. Wei Sun, a third-year computer science student at Northwestern Engineering double majoring in psychology at Weinberg, was eager to both gain insights from professionals in leading industries and to build stronger relationships with the cohort.
A Bay Area native, he offers a designer’s sense of artistry supported by practical knowledge gained from years of direct hands-on building experience. Mark earned a bachelor of architecture degree at California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo, and a master of architecture degree at the Syracuse University campus in Florence, Italy. The meat is cooked over a grill that chefs hover over like they’re meticulously looking for Marvel Easter eggs, but instead, they’re constantly fanning embers and making sure the steaks are perfectly charred.
This initiative showcased how AI-integrated tools can empower designers to work more efficiently, delivering exceptional designs with unprecedented speed without compromising on creativity. Earlier this year, Freepik brought forward revitalization initiatives in their global headquarters of Malaga, Spain through their Neighborhood Design Malaga project. The Museum of Craft and Design is the only museum in San Francisco devoted to craft and design. Founded in 2004, MCD showcases designers, makers and artists through an exciting and distinctive series of craft and design-focused exhibitions and public programs.
From exterior design to interior enhancements and merchandise, the AI-powered transformations were completed in under a week, and usher in a new era of AI-assisted design. At Adobe Research in San Jose, research lab director Tong Sun organized a reception and tour of Founders Tower and Almaden Tower. Designed with vibrant artistic and immersive experiences, the colorful workspaces emphasize interaction, collaboration, and team building and include team neighborhoods, focus rooms, collaboration zones, drop-in desks, adventure rooms, and community gathering grounds.
Dumpling Time is a small and lively dim sum spot near CCA that’s basically always packed, especially for dinner. It feels more like a lobby restaurant in a trendy hotel than one of the banquet-style dim sum places you’ll find in Chinatown or the Richmond, with long communal tables, neon signs, and an entire wall covered in projected K-pop music videos. It’s a fun spot to start a night out, but the main reason this place always has a wait is the food.
